Phase 3: Scale (Months 5-8)

Goal: Cloud bursting, auto-scaling, heterogeneous topology
Status: 🔴 Not Started
Depends on: Phase 2 (Federation)

Auto-Scaling

  • Auto-scaler based on queue depth
    • Spawn cloud workers when queue > 100
    • Kill idle workers after TTL
    • Hetzner/AWS cloud worker templates

GPU Cluster

  • GPU-intensive tasks route to compute nodes
    • GPU capability class
    • Priority queue for GPU workloads
    • Multi-GPU coordination

Multi-Tier Topology

  • Tailnet + VPN + public nodes coexist
    • Trust tier enforcement
    • Tailnet: high trust
    • VPN: medium trust
    • Public: low trust, sandboxed

Kubernetes Integration

  • k3s pilot deployment
    • Kubernetes operator managing mesh
    • CRD design: Capability, Intent, Pathway
    • Helm charts for mesh deployment

Cloud Infrastructure

Required

  • Hetzner/AWS accounts configured
  • GPU instance templates
  • Container registry

New Components

  • Auto-scaler service
  • Cloud worker lifecycle manager
  • Cost tracking and alerts

Dependencies

Phase 2 (Federation) → This phase
Multi-node routing → Cloud bursting
Service discovery → Auto-scaling

Success Metrics

  • Auto-scale up: < 60s from trigger to ready worker
  • Auto-scale down: graceful shutdown with task completion
  • GPU utilization > 70% during load
  • Cost per intent < $0.01

Acceptance Criteria

  • Queue depth > 100 triggers cloud worker spawn
  • GPU tasks route to GPU-capable nodes
  • Public nodes cannot access tailnet resources
  • k3s operator manages mesh lifecycle
