Summary

The compose engine's primitive fitter does not detect a torus primitive.
A clean toroidal point cloud produces [plane, plane, plane] (three planes,
no torus), and the reconstruction is a solid cylinder with the central
hole filled in. Topology collapses from genus-1 to genus-0.

Coverage: 0.322 at 1mm tolerance (target ≥0.80).

Reproduction

cd /home/b/Projects/pc2cad
.venv/bin/python pc2cad_cli.py samples/synth/synth_torus.ply \
    --out /tmp/synth_torus.step --engine compose --deterministic-ransac --seed 42
.venv/bin/python tests/render_compare.py samples/synth/synth_torus.ply /tmp/synth_torus.step \
    --out-dir /tmp/render --tolerance 1.0
# coverage: 0.322 (1609/5000 within 1.0 mm)

Input (synth_torus)

Torus: major radius 50mm, minor radius 15mm. 5000 surface points,
1mm Gaussian noise. Surface has continuous curvature, no flat regions.

Expected

The fitter recognizes the genus-1 topology (one hole through center)
and emits a torus primitive. Output body is a Solid with a
torus kind in the primitive list.

Actual

Fitter emits only planes. Output reconstruction is a closed cylinder
(no central hole). The defining topology of the torus is lost.

Side-by-side: docs/visual-bug-evidence-2026-09-18/synth_torus_side_by_side.png

Report findings

compose_body_with_features fit 3 planes (no torus). All density bins
contain zero of any non-plane primitive. adjacency is empty (the
planes aren't being related to each other or to a torus).

Acceptance

samples/synth/synth_torus.ply reconstruction contains a torus
primitive; render_compare reports coverage ≥0.85 at 1mm tolerance.

## Summary The compose engine's primitive fitter does not detect a torus primitive. [launcher preflight-fail] ruff check . exits 1 (185 errors) against /home/b/Projects/pc2cad — repo-wide baseline lint debt blocks kilo-gsd dispatch on every pc2cad issue, not just #73. Gate at .gsd/gates/pre-dispatch.sh passes its own 3 checks, but kilo-gsd.py preflight will hard-fail at runtime. Operator action: (a) file a separate lint-cleanup fixit, OR (b) add [tool.ruff] config to pyproject.toml to scope/de-ignore the pre-existing debt (preferred — unstucks every held pc2cad ticket at once). Launcher card t_dd196695 blocked capability:preflight.

Status (2026-09-20): Partial fix verified landed on origin/main — 3 commits reference #73 (dcd084e, 9b7eebe, 8dee5f4) plus local ahead-commit 2ebe4cf. Topology side works: fitter emits torus primitives (no more "[plane, plane, plane]"), geometry recovers major/minor radii within 1.5mm.

Coverage gate still failing: render_compare coverage is 0.149 on HEAD and 0.380 on origin/main vs the ≥0.85 target. test_torus_synthesize_body_emits_torus_solid fails on both — the synthesized body bbox z-extent is 0.030m vs expected 0.130m (2*(50+15)mm). The body emission from the torus primitive is producing a degenerate/flat shape.

Substrate blocker: kilo-gsd pre-dispatch gate (.gsd/gates/pre-dispatch.sh 73) blocks because tests/test_compose.py has 114 lines of uncommitted test additions from a prior killed run. Kanban launcher blocked on kind=capability for operator triage. Decisions needed: (a) commit the partial tests (preserves work) vs git checkout -- (clean slate); (b) re-dispatch kilo-gsd to fix the body emission side.

Watcher diagnostic — Mark/pc2cad#73 (2026-09-20)

Watcher pass on the original launcher run t_dd196695 confirms partial fix landed on origin/main but the acceptance gate is still failing:

Topology side ✅ — Commits dcd084e (RANSAC + compose evidence gate), 9b7eebe (synthesize torus), 8dee5f4 (non-linear LS radii refinement) are on origin/main. Fitter now emits torus primitives and the STEP body has 3 Geom_ToroidalSurface faces — genus-1 topology preserved (no more cylinder-with-hole-filled).

Coverage gate ❌ — render_compare reports coverage: 0.3804 (1902/5000 within 1.0 mm) on origin/main HEAD vs the ≥0.85 acceptance criterion. Original bug report was 0.322, so the new fix moves the needle by +0.058 only.

Root cause (same unit-conversion pattern as #74's cone fix, commit 4f2d3a59):
The synthesized torus body bbox z-extent is 0.030 m vs expected 0.130 m (2*(50+15) mm). The torus is being emitted in meters but the input point cloud and the validation distance metric are in millimeters — every comparison is off by ~1000×, so the geometry-validation gate fails and the synthesize path falls through to a degenerate fallback. synthesize_with_fallback in pc2cad_compose.py validates the solid against pcd.points without applying units_scale_factor from fit_result.report, while the cone path (fixed in 4f2d3a59) does.

Reproduction on clean origin/main HEAD:

cd /home/b/Projects/pc2cad
.venv/bin/python pc2cad_cli.py samples/synth/synth_torus.ply \
    --out /tmp/synth_torus_check.step --engine compose \
    --deterministic-ransac --seed 42
.venv/bin/python tests/render_compare.py samples/synth/synth_torus.ply \
    /tmp/synth_torus_check.step --out-dir /tmp/render_torus --tolerance 1.0
# coverage: 0.380 (1902/5000 within 1.0 mm) — FAIL ≥0.85

Regression scaffold is staged — local commit cabfc24 test(compose): add torus fitter regression tests for Mark/pc2cad#73 adds 3 tests to tests/test_compose.py (test_torus_fitter_emits_torus_primitive, test_torus_primitive_recovers_geometry, test_torus_synthesize_body_emits_torus_solid). The third test pins the bbox at 2*(50+15)mm = 130mm per axis and currently fails on origin/main HEAD — once the unit-scale fix lands it will pass and serve as the gate.

Substrate state for re-dispatch:

  • Worktree clean (git status --porcelain empty), pre-dispatch gate passes
  • 1 unpushed commit ahead of origin/main (the test scaffold at cabfc24)
  • New run t_938e4656 is in Phase 1/9 Research as of 20:15:35 PDT — picking up where this left off
  • Two in-progress labels currently on the issue (stale green from the Sep-19 crashed run + fresh blue from t_938e4656)

Suggested fix scope for the in-flight run:
In pc2cad_compose.py _synthesize_curved_only, when handling kind == "torus", apply units_scale_factor from fit_result.report to the torus radii (major_radius * sf, minor_radius * sf) and to the centre coordinates before passing to build123d.Torus(...) — same one-line pattern as the cone fix in 4f2d3a59. Verify with the new regression test + render_compare gate.

Reopening — vision verification on current origin/main @ e8053cb shows the bug is NOT fixed.

Reopening: torus fitter substrate (dcd084e/9b7eebe/8dee5f4) added but visual verification of L-bracket (#72) and methodology_assembly (#77) reconstructions on current origin/main @ e8053cb shows phantom geometry still present. The torus primitive may not be the only bug class; need targeted visual verification with a torus-bearing sample.

Tracking card filed — kanban t_550e893e covers the metric-gate blind spot that let this issue slip past 'fixed' (coverage metric catches under-reconstruction but not over-reconstruction; phantom pillars/holes inflate coverage). Fix adds symmetric Chamfer + extraneous-surface fraction to render_compare.py, plus a topology regression test. Visual evidence at /tmp/lbracket_verify_render/side_by_side.png (this issue) and /tmp/methodology_assembly_render/side_by_side.png (#77).
