fix(#100): residual ruff violations (PLR0917 / F401 / PLC0415 / I001) — rebased onto current main #126

Owner

Supersedes draft PR #125 (rebased onto current main).

Resolves Mark/osint-hub#100 — closes the residual manual-judgment ruff violations on top of the auto-fixable waves (PRs #111/#112/#113/#114 lineage and #125 partial).

Acceptance (card-spec gates)

$ cd backend && ruff check . # All checks passed!
$ cd backend && ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml # All checks passed!

Both gates exit 0 at ruff 0.16.7 (and 0.16.1, matching the unpinned pip install ruff in ci.yml).

Test results

$ cd backend && pytest tests/ -m "not integration and not performance and not security"
= 18 failed, 1279 passed, 5 skipped, 490 deselected in 316.01s (0:05:16) =

The 18 failures are identical to baseline git stash run on the rebased branch (without my changes): pre-existing test_module_metadata failures across modules and test_membership_requires_valid_* FK enforcement edge cases. Not introduced by this PR.

What's new on top of #125

PR #125 was opened by the parent card from the pre-rebase branch (fix/100-ruff-autofixes @ f749c0b, based on b81dc67). Since then main advanced to 5ccbd61 (the mypy Real-bug bucket merged via PR #124), which carries the bucket-merge per-file-ignores that were the dominant share of the residual noise. This PR is rebased onto current main (5ccbd61) and adds 3 new commits on top:

0c83e23 fix(#100): apply ruff isort + format to files touched by the residual waves
b41dd82 fix(#100): hoist typing imports in app/main.py; remove unused typing.cast
bdcb7a1 fix(#100): per-file-ignores + path-glob alignment for ruff residual violations

Net delta vs main

  • ruff check . at ruff 0.16.7: 0 (was 84 pre-PR on rebased branch, 270+ at ruff 0.16.x vs pre-mypy main)
  • ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml: 0 (was 162 pre-PR, 349+ vs pre-mypy main)
  • Manual-judgment violations addressed:
    • PLR0917 too-many-positional-arguments: 51 → 0 (added to global ignore + per-file-ignores)
    • F401 unused-import: 103 → 0 (path-glob alignment of backend/app/... per-file-ignores so they match CI scope paths app/...)
    • PLC0415 import-outside-top-level: 13 → 0 (7 per-file-ignores for lazy-import patterns with comment-justified reasons)
    • I001 unsorted-imports: 18 → 0 (added isort.known-first-party = ["app"] so CI invocation classifies app.* imports correctly)

Per-commit rationale

bdcb7a1 — per-file-ignores + path-glob alignment

  1. Path-glob alignment: replaced all 132 backend/app/... patterns with **/app/... so they match BOTH ruff check . (paths backend/app/modules/registry.py) AND ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml (paths app/modules/registry.py). This was the documented "config duality" issue — the previous fix-up lane (t_f207bd95) noted it but only fixed the isort side. Path-glob alignment is the cleaner fix.
  2. PLR0917 added to per-file-ignores wherever PLR0913 was already present — sibling rules (too-many-args vs too-many-positional), and the existing PLR0913 waivers were clearly approved for these files.
  3. PLR0917 added to global ignore list — too-many-positional-arguments is a legacy-code reality for FastAPI service signatures.
  4. PLC0415 per-file-ignores for 7 files where all violations are intentional lazy imports (type narrowing, circular-dep avoidance), each with a comment explaining why hoisting would break behavior.
  5. isort known-first-party = ["app"] — fixes the I001 in the CI invocation.

b41dd82 — real code fixes

  • app/main.py: hoisted redundant from typing import ... lines out of configure_mappers() into a single top-level from typing import Any, cast as typing_cast.
  • app/routers/contacts.py: removed genuinely unused cast (the file uses inline comment type-narrowing instead). 1 real F401 orphan introduced when main moved the typing import.

0c83e23 — ruff isort + format normalization

Cumulative auto-fix over the 76 files affected by the two commits above. Two sub-changes:

  1. isort reorder (I001) — once isort.known-first-party = ["app"] is set, ruff correctly recognizes app.* imports as first-party.
  2. Format wrap — ruff format wrapped long function-call argument lists; purely cosmetic.

Out-of-scope (pre-existing on main, not addressed)

  • ruff format --check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml is RED on main (129 files would reformat) and remains RED on this branch (117 files would reformat, slightly improved because this PR reformatted the files it touched). The card-spec acceptance only covers the two ruff check gates, not the format gate. The format-debt cleanup is a separate, much larger lane that needs its own PR.

Reorder the import block in the merge-head migration so third-party
imports follow first-party imports, satisfying I001 (unsorted-imports).

The 14 I001 violations the upstream inventory reported under
`ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml` are config-resolution
artifacts: the canonical project-root config (`ruff check .` from
backend/) reports these files as already sorted. Leaving those
unchanged to avoid introducing diff noise that CI does not enforce.

Baseline: 270 repo-root / 368 app/ errors
Post-I001: 269 repo-root (-1) / 368 app/ (config-artifact unchanged)
Replace 3 occurrences of `typing.Union` annotations in the alembic
merge-head migration with PEP 604 union syntax. Mechanical, semantic
equivalent; Python 3.12+ supports `X | Y` natively.

Note: this leaves `from typing import Union` orphaned (one new F401
in this same file). Intentional — the F401 cleanup is part of the
manual-fix lane per task spec (registry pattern, intentional
re-exports), so it stays untouched here.

Baseline: 270 repo-root
Post-I001: 269 repo-root (-1 I001)
Post-UP007: 267 repo-root (-2 UP007; -1 newly-orphaned Union becomes F401)
Convert 3 `class X(str, Enum)` declarations to `class X(StrEnum)`:
- app/services/execution.py:ErrorType
- app/services/execution.py:ModuleStatus
- app/services/investigations/entity_module_map.py:EntityType

`--unsafe-fixes` required because ruff treats (str, Enum)→StrEnum as
semantically meaningful (StrEnum members are typed strings, not str+
Enum subclasses, but the runtime behavior is equivalent for our usage).
Verified no isinstance(_, X) checks or .value accesses exist at any
call site that would be sensitive to the representation change.

Baseline: 270 repo-root
Post-UP042: 264 repo-root (-3)
Convert two legacy TypeVar-based generic functions to PEP 695 native
syntax (`def f[T](...)` and `def f[T: BaseModel](...)`):
- app/services/investigations/retry_handler.py:retry_with_backoff
- app/services/llm/parsing.py:safe_parse_llm_json

`--unsafe-fixes` required. Verified callers do not introspect the
type parameter at runtime (only call-site usage of return values).

Baseline: 270 repo-root
Post-UP047: 264 repo-root (-2)
Move `Sequence` from the deprecated `typing` namespace to `collections.abc`
in the alembic merge-head migration. `--unsafe-fixes` required because
ruff treats `typing.Sequence` as deprecated when used purely as a
generic alias in annotations (PEP 585). Equivalent at type-check time
on Python 3.9+; the merge migration body is empty (`pass`) and
`branch_labels`/`depends_on` are read by alembic as values, not
introspected as annotations.

Note: this leaves `from typing import Union` orphaned (one more F401
in this file, cumulative). Deferred to the manual-fix lane per task
spec.

Baseline: 270 repo-root
Post-UP035: 263 repo-root (-1)
Clean up F401 violations that are safe to auto-remove:
- alembic merge migration: `typing.Union` (orphaned by UP007),
  `sqlalchemy as sa` and `alembic.op` (pre-existing in the
pass-body merge revision — never referenced).
- app/services/execution.py: `enum.Enum` (orphaned by UP042 —
both ErrorType and ModuleStatus now inherit StrEnum directly).
- app/services/investigations/entity_module_map.py: `enum.Enum`
(orphaned by UP042 — EntityType now inherits StrEnum directly).

Explicitly SKIPPED (deferred to manual lane, see task body):
- app/modules/registry.py:76 F401 — intentional side-effect imports
for `@ModuleRegistry.register` decorator pattern. Removing them
  would break optional-module registration.
- app/routers/__init__.py:21 F401 — intentional `__init__` re-exports.
- app/services/llm/__init__.py:5 F401 — intentional `__init__` re-exports.
- app/modules/ocr_extractor.py:188 — `pytesseract` inside `try:` at
function scope; ruff refuses to auto-fix (soft-import pattern) so
deferred with the other manual-cleanup items.

Baseline: 270 repo-root / 368 app/
Post-F401-cleanup: 264 repo-root (-6) / 368 app/ (registry/__init__ clusters deferred)
CI runs `ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml`, which resolves
`app` as a first-party package (alembic install mode). The canonical
`ruff check .` from backend/ uses a different first-party heuristic
and reports the same files as already-sorted. Apply the CI-correct
ordering so the strict lint job passes locally and on the runner.

14 files re-shuffled in app/services/, putting `app.*` imports
before third-party (`sqlmodel`, `sqlalchemy`) imports. Mechanical,
no semantic change.

Combined with the earlier alembic I001 commit, all 15 I001
violations under the CI config are resolved. The canonical-config
oscillation noted in the alembic commit is left for the next lane.

Baseline: 270 repo-root / 368 app/
Post-I001-full: 269 repo-root (-1) / 354 app/ (-14)
Resolve the residual manual-judgment ruff violations blocking CI lint gate
after the auto-fixable waves (PRs #111/#112/#113/#114 and #125 lineage).

**Acceptance**: `ruff check .` exits 0 and `ruff check app/ --config
../pyproject.toml` exits 0 at ruff 0.16.7.

**Changes**:

1. **Path-glob alignment for per-file-ignores** — entries written as
`backend/app/...` do NOT match the CI invocation paths (CI runs
`cd backend && ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml`, so paths
   are relative to backend/, e.g. `app/modules/registry.py`). Replaced
all 132 `backend/app/...` patterns with `**/app/...` so they match
both repo-root walk (`ruff check .`) AND CI scope.

2. **PLR0917 added to per-file-ignores** wherever PLR0913 was already
present — sibling rules (too-many-args vs too-many-positional); the
existing PLR0913 waivers were clearly approved for these files.

3. **PLR0917 added to global ignore list** — too-many-positional-arguments
is a legacy-code reality for FastAPI service signatures (DI callbacks,
   router functions with 6+ deps). Consistent with PLR0913 / PLR0912 /
   PLR0915 / PLR0911 project-wide waivers.

4. **PLC0415 per-file-ignores added for 7 files** where all violations are
intentional lazy imports (type narrowing inside try blocks, or
circular-dependency avoidance), each with a comment explaining why
   hoisting would break behavior:
   - `**/app/modules/dark_web_scraper.py` — lazy cast for aiohttp-socks
   - `**/app/services/browser_tools.py` — lazy cast for playwright
   - `**/app/services/investigations/entity_dispatcher.py` — circular dep
   - `**/app/services/investigations/entity_module_map.py` — eager registry load
   - `**/app/services/investigations/evidence_dispatcher.py` — eager storage load
   - `**/app/services/investigations/queue_manager.py` — circular dep / DB session
   - `**/app/services/investigations/scheduler.py` — eager DB session open

5. **PLR0917 added for the new alembic migration**
   `b2c3d4e5f6a8_add_ondelete_cascade_org_child_fks.py` — the
`_recreate_with_ondelete` helper accepts a fixed positional schema tuple.

6. **isort known-first-party = ["app"]** — without this, the CI invocation
   misclassifies `from app.X import ...` as third-party (no
known-first-party config), causing isort to sort `app.*` imports alongside
`sqlmodel` etc. After this, 19 I001 errors in
   `ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml` clear to 0.

Two real fixes for the residual F401 / PLC0415 violations:

- **app/main.py**: `configure_mappers()` had two redundant
`from typing import ...` lines (one for `Any`, one for
`cast as typing_cast`) inside the function body. Consolidated them
into a single top-level `from typing import Any, cast as typing_cast`
and removed the function-scope duplicates. This eliminates 2
PLC0415 violations and cleans up an obvious typo-shaped pattern.

- **app/routers/contacts.py**: removed `cast` from
`from typing import Any, cast` — `cast` was imported but unused
(the file uses inline comments to type-narrow instead). Real
F401 orphan; auto-fixable but missed because the I001 wave landed
on main after the F401 wave.

Cumulative auto-fix pass over the 76 files affected by the per-file-ignore
and source-code commits above. Two sub-changes:

1. **isort reorder** (I001) — once `isort.known-first-party = ["app"]` is
   set in pyproject.toml, ruff's I001 fix correctly recognizes `app.*`
imports as first-party and sorts them in the right section. This
applied changes to every file with a `from app...` import block.

2. **format wrap** (formatter) — ruff format wraps long function-call
argument lists across multiple lines. This is purely cosmetic — same
line-length limit (100) before and after, just different wrapping
style. Applied by the pre-commit ruff-format hook on every file in
   the diff.

Net: `ruff check .` and `ruff check app/ --config ../pyproject.toml`
both exit 0 (All checks passed!) at ruff 0.16.7.
