Overview

Enable factories to write actual capability implementations instead of stub code, using LLM-powered code generation.

Problem Statement

Current capability_factory creates skeleton implementations:

# Current: capability_factory writes this stub
def execute_my_capability(intent, profile, ...):
    raise NotImplementedError("Implement the execution logic")

This requires human intervention to implement the actual logic.

Proposed Solution

5.1.1: ImplementationGenerator Class

Create capabilities/_shared/codegen.py with:

class ImplementationGenerator:
    """LLM-powered capability implementation writer."""

    def generate_implementation(
        self,
        template: dict,  # capability template.yaml
        skill_family: str,
        contract_schema: dict,
        examples: list[dict] # historic successful executions
    ) -> str:
        """Generate working Python code for capability."""
        ...

5.1.2: Code Generation Pipeline

Template + Contract + Examples → LLM → Implementation Code
         ↓
    Schema Validation
         ↓
    Syntax Check (ast.parse)
         ↓
    Unit Test Generation
         ↓
    Save to _nerve/<cap_id>/run.py

5.1.3: Integration Points

  1. capability_factory - Call ImplementationGenerator in create_capability skill
  2. skill_factory - Already has LLM generation (skill_author pattern)
  3. prompt_factory - Generate prompt templates with LLM

Deliverables

  • capabilities/_shared/codegen.py - ImplementationGenerator class
  • generate_from_template() - Template-to-code synthesis
  • generate_from_examples() - Few-shot learning from historic runs
  • validate_syntax() - AST-based validation
  • generate_tests() - Auto-generate unit tests for new capability
  • Integration with capability_factory.create_capability

Technical Design

LLM Prompt Structure

IMPLEMENTATION_PROMPT = """
You are generating a capability implementation for mesh-seed.

## Capability Template
{template_yaml}

## Input Schema
{input_schema}

## Output Schema
{output_schema}

## Successful Examples
{examples}

## Requirements
1. Implement the `execute()` function
2. Follow mesh-seed coding conventions (see AGENTS.md)
3. Include error handling
4. Return dict with 'ok' and 'result' or 'error'
5. NO comments in code
6. Use Python 3.12+ syntax

Generate the complete run.py implementation:
"""

Safety Measures

  1. Sandboxed execution - Generated code runs in isolated environment
  2. Timeout limits - 30s max execution time
  3. Input validation - Schema-validated inputs only
  4. Output validation - Results must match output_schema
  5. Rollback - Keep previous working version

Success Criteria

  • Generated code passes syntax validation
  • Generated code passes unit tests
  • Generated capability can execute simple intents
  • Success rate > 80% on generated implementations
  • No security vulnerabilities in generated code

Dependencies

  • None (foundational)

Estimated Duration

2 weeks

Final Progress Update - Issue #63 Complete ✅

Summary

All deliverables for Issue #63 (Autonomous Code Generation for Capabilities) have been completed and tested.

Deliverables Completed

Deliverable Status Details
ImplementationGenerator class ✅ capabilities/_shared/codegen.py (551 lines)
generate_from_template() ✅ Template-to-code synthesis
generate_from_examples() ✅ Few-shot learning from historic runs
validate_syntax() ✅ AST-based validation (execute function, future import, safe imports)
generate_tests() ✅ Auto-generates unit tests with fallback stubs
Integration with capability_factory ✅ generate_implementation: true flag produces real code instead of stubs
Provider/Model override ✅ LLMs can be specified per-generation (^--^ Ollama/OpenAI/Anthropic)
Security validation ✅ Blocks dangerous imports, allows mesh-seed internal imports
Test suite ✅ 18 unit tests + 8 integration tests = 26 tests passing

Key Features

  1. Real Code Generation: Instead of raise NotImplementedError, factories now generate working Python implementations
  2. Few-Shot Learning: Uses historic successful executions as examples for better code generation
  3. Syntax Validation: AST-based validation ensures generated code follows mesh-seed conventions
  4. Test Generation: Automatically creates pytest unit tests for new capabilities
  5. Fallback Safety: Falls back to skeleton implementation if LLM generation fails
  6. Provider Flexibility: Can use Ollama, OpenAI, Anthropic, or compatible APIs
  7. Markdown Extraction: Handles LLM responses wrapped in python ... code blocks

Usage Example

# In capability_factory payload:
{
    "capability_id": "text_summarizer_v1",
    "template_spec": {...},
    "skills": [...],
    "generate_implementation": True,  # ← Triggers LLM generation
    "examples": [                   # ← Optional few-shot learning
        {"input": {"text": "Hello world"}, "output": {"summary": "Greeting"}},
        {"input": {"text": "Foo bar baz"}, "output": {"summary": "Three words"}}
    ],
    "provider": "ollama", # ← Optional provider override
    "model": "qwen2.5-coder:7b",    # ← Optional model override
    "temperature": 0.2              # ← Optional temperature override
}

Test Results

  • Unit tests: 618 passed, 3 skipped
  • Codegen unit tests: 18 passed
  • Codegen integration tests: 8 passed
  • No regressions: All existing functionality preserved

Next Steps

Issue #64 (Closed-Loop Factory Learning) can now begin - this will track generation success rates and enable factories to learn from their own outputs.

Files Modified/Added

  • capabilities/_shared/codegen.py - ImplementationGenerator (new)
  • tests/unit/test_codegen.py - Unit tests (new)
  • tests/integration/test_codegen_integration.py - Integration tests (new)
  • capabilities/_muscle/capability_factory/run.py - Integration points (modified)

Ready for Production

The system is ready to generate real capabilities using LLMs. Testing with Ollama shows successful generation of working code that passes syntax validation, compiles, and executes correctly.

Issue #63 is complete. Ready to move to Issue #64 or close as finished.
