Editor has no 'save as preset' for the current design as a template — user wanting to reuse the layout (e.g., a quilt block) for a new design has to start from scratch, no template library #307

Finding

grep -rn 'saveAsPreset\|saveAsTemplate' src/components/editor/ returns 0. The editor has no "Save as template" affordance.

A user with a quilt block layout:

  • Wants to use the same layout for a different fabric
  • Currently: opens a saved design, edits, saves
  • Wants: opens the template, applies a new fabric/colors, saves

The fix is a "Templates" library. The user can save a design as a template (no actual stitch data, just the structure), then start a new design from a template.

Where

  • Editor's Save button: src/components/editor/EditorHeader.tsx (per the snippet)
  • No template: grep -rn 'saveAsTemplate' src/components/editor/ returns 0
  • The Gallery has designs; the new entity would be "templates"

Suggested fix shape

  1. Save as template: a "Save as template" option in the Save dropdown:
<DropdownMenuItem onClick={onSaveAsTemplate}>
  <Bookmark size={14} className="mr-2" /> Save as template...
</DropdownMenuItem>

onSaveAsTemplate opens a small modal: "Save as template. Template name?" with a text input. Save calls saveDesignAsTemplate({ name, paths, settings }).

  1. Templates library: a "Templates" tab in the Gallery (or a new "Templates" page). The user sees the templates they've saved.

  2. New from template: clicking a template opens a "Create new design from 'Quilt Block 1'?" modal. Confirm opens the editor with the template's paths and settings.

  3. State: templates are stored in localStorage (per #148's pattern). The user has a personal template library.

  4. Built-in templates: the app ships with 5-10 starter templates (a circle, a star, a leaf, a quilt block, etc.) so the user has something to start with.

Severity

Low. The user can save a design and "open as new" (per #187's Save as New). The template library is the more curated version.

  • #187 (closed) — Save as New. The basic save-as is in place; the template is the reusable version.
  • The Gallery has designs; the Templates is the parallel.
  • Most embroidery software (Wilcom, Hatch) has template libraries.
