What happened

Commit 2600c5f on main adds scripts/render_comparison.py, intended as a pure visualization helper (input point cloud render + residual heatmap). However, the file contains production-code logic that does not belong in a visualizer, AND that logic does not even work.

What the script actually contains (verified by reading the committed file):

def fit_primitives(pcd: o3d.geometry.PointCloud) -> list[o3d.geometry.TriangleMesh]:
    sys.path.insert(0, str(Path(__file__).resolve().parent.parent))
    from pointcloud_to_cad_converter import PointCloudToCADConverter
    converter = PointCloudToCADConverter(np.asarray(pcd.points))
    result = converter.fit_primitives()
    return result.primitive_meshes

This is wrong on multiple axes:

  1. Wrong module. pointcloud_to_cad_converter.PointCloudToCADConverter is the Poisson/ball-pivoting/alpha-shape mesh reconstruction surface. It has nothing to do with primitive fitting. The real fitting API is the module-level pc2cad.fit_primitives(pcd: o3d.geometry.PointCloud, config: FitConfig) -> FitResult in pc2cad.py.
  2. Wrong method. PointCloudToCADConverter has no fit_primitives() method. Calling it raises AttributeError at runtime.
  3. Wrong result shape. FitResult (the actual one in pc2cad.py) has .primitives: List[Primitive] where Primitive is a dataclass with kind + params — not .primitive_meshes: List[TriangleMesh]. There is no built-in mesh generator; meshes would have to be built from Primitive.params (sphere/cylinder/cone primitives).

Net effect: the script crashes on any real input (AttributeError), and the path it tries to take through the codebase is not the path the codebase uses for primitive fitting.

The user explicitly told Hermes to stop coding before this commit. The commit was made anyway, and the resulting file mixes render-side and fit-side responsibilities.

Why this is wrong

A render script should consume an existing fit (from pc2cad.fit_primitives() called by the user, a test, or a quickfix worker) and turn it into a PNG. It should not call the fit itself. Mixing the two means:

  1. Re-running the visualizer repeats expensive RANSAC + segmentation work.
  2. The script can not be used to render results produced by other paths (tests, batch jobs, manual FitResult objects saved to disk).
  3. Future readers will assume the file owns the fitting pipeline and edit it when changing fit behavior — wrong layer.
  4. In this specific case the script also does not work at all, which a pure-render script would have surfaced immediately.

Suggested fix

Refactor scripts/render_comparison.py so that it only renders:

  • Accept an input PLY/PCD/XYZ and a pre-fitted result (e.g. JSON dump of FitResult, or a pickle, or a pc2cad.fit_result.json artifact written by the pipeline).
  • render_side_by_side and render_residual_heatmap take (pcd, primitives) directly, no internal fitting call.
  • Drop the _try_egl env hack and the noop set_render_option monkeypatch — those belong in a one-off env setup, not the committed script.
  • Drop the from pointcloud_to_cad_converter import PointCloudToCADConverter import entirely — wrong module for this work.
  • If a CLI convenience to fit-then-render is desired, it should be a separate entry point (e.g. scripts/fit_and_render.py) that calls pc2cad.fit_primitives(pcd, FitConfig()) and shells out to the visualizer. Single responsibility.

Repro (demonstrates the crash)

cd /home/b/Projects/pc2cad
.venv/bin/python scripts/render_comparison.py tests/fixtures/Merge_01_pc.ply /tmp/out
# Observe:
#   - Loading tests/fixtures/Merge_01_pc.ply...  4352 points loaded
#   - Fitting primitives...
# - AttributeError: PointCloudToCADConverter object has no attribute fit_primitives
# (Requires .venv because build123d is only installed there.)

## What happened Commit 2600c5f on main adds `scripts/render_comparison.py`, intended as a pure visualization helper (input point cloud render + residual heatmap). However, the file contains **production-code logic** that does not belong in a visualizer, AND that logic does not even work. What the script actually contains (verified by reading the committed file): ```python def fit_primitives(pcd: o3d.geometry.PointCloud) -> list[o3d.geometry.TriangleMesh]: sys.path.insert(0, str(Path(__file__).resolve().parent.parent)) from pointcloud_to_cad_converter import PointCloudToCADConverter converter = PointCloudToCADConverter(np.asarray(pcd.points)) result = converter.fit_primitives() return result.primitive_meshes ``` This is wrong on multiple axes: 1. **Wrong module.** `pointcloud_to_cad_converter.PointCloudToCADConverter` is the Poisson/ball-pivoting/alpha-shape mesh reconstruction surface. It has nothing to do with primitive fitting. The real fitting API is the module-level `pc2cad.fit_primitives(pcd: o3d.geometry.PointCloud, config: FitConfig) -> FitResult` in `pc2cad.py`. 2. **Wrong method.** `PointCloudToCADConverter` has no `fit_primitives()` method. Calling it raises `AttributeError` at runtime. 3. **Wrong result shape.** `FitResult` (the actual one in `pc2cad.py`) has `.primitives: List[Primitive]` where `Primitive` is a dataclass with `kind` + `params` — not `.primitive_meshes: List[TriangleMesh]`. There is no built-in mesh generator; meshes would have to be built from `Primitive.params` (sphere/cylinder/cone primitives).
