Editor's Path List doesn't show how many nodes are in each path — user with 10 paths has to click each one to see the node count, no at-a-glance summary #270

Finding

src/components/editor/EditorRightPanel.tsx's path list rows show:

  • Color swatch
  • Path name
  • Visibility toggle
  • Fit to view
  • (Right panel's Path Properties section shows Total Nodes for the SELECTED path)

But the per-row path list doesn't show the node count. The user has to select a path, then read the "Total Nodes" in Path Properties.

grep -n 'nodes.length' src/components/editor/EditorRightPanel.tsx — the count is referenced in the Path Properties section but not in the row itself.

A user with 10 paths:

  • Wants to find the path with 5 nodes
  • Has to click each one and read the count
  • Could be 10 clicks

The fix is a small N nodes badge on each row.

Where

  • Path list row: src/components/editor/EditorRightPanel.tsx:142-180
  • No node count in row: grep -n 'nodes' src/components/editor/EditorRightPanel.tsx (the count is in Path Properties, not the row)

Suggested fix shape

Add a small text/badge to each row showing the node count:

<span className="text-[10px]" style={{ color: '#6B6560' }}>
  {p.nodes.length} nodes
</span>

Render it next to the path name (or in a tooltip on hover for the icons view per #267).

The user can now scan the list and find paths with the right node count.

Optionally: color-code by complexity:

  • < 5 nodes: green
  • 5-15 nodes: yellow
  • 15 nodes: red (gets complex)

This is a visual cue for "this is a simple path" vs "this is a complex one."

Severity

Low. The user can click each path. Power users with many paths notice.

Discovered by

Gap analysis (2026-10-02) of editor path list affordances.

  • The Path Properties section (per the snippet) already shows the node count for the selected path. The row is the bulk-summary version.
  • #244 (open) — Stitch-type icon. Same row; the icon is the "type" visual.
  • #248 (open) — Path list search/filter. Same row; the search is the lookup.

Shipped at 4c6ac10 — fix(#270): per-row node count in every path-list view mode.

Restored the at-a-glance node count in every view mode:

  • Comfortable: existing visible {n} nodes · {type} meta line (kept from #244); added hidden path-node-count-<id> test-id span.
  • Compact: inline N node(s) badge next to the path name (muted gray #6B6560), as the issue suggested.
  • Icons: count surfaced via the title attribute (hover-tooltip) and aria-label (screen-reader read), since the 5-column grid has no room for inline text.

All three views now expose a uniform path-node-count-<id> test-id contract. 11 new tests in issue-270.test.tsx; 3 pre-existing tests in EditorRightPanel.test.tsx updated. 1479/1480 tests pass (1 pre-existing skipped); tsc + eslint clean.
