Severity: Critical

Description

The admin account is created with hardcoded default credentials (admin@example.local / adminadmin) at application startup via backend/app/init_db.py:15-20. The password is stored in settings with a default value (settings.py:19), and the .env file checked into version control also contains OSINT_ADMIN_PASSWORD=adminadmin.

Files

  • backend/app/settings.py lines 18-19: Default admin_email and admin_password
  • backend/app/init_db.py lines 13-21: Creates admin user with these defaults
  • backend/.env line 13: OSINT_ADMIN_PASSWORD=adminadmin
  • docker-compose.yml line 42: OSINT_ADMIN_PASSWORD: ${ADMIN_PASSWORD:-adminadmin}

Impact

Any attacker who can reach the login page can authenticate as admin with adminadmin. The only protection is a warning log message, which provides no actual security.

Recommendation

  1. Remove default admin password from code — require first-time setup via CLI
  2. Add a setup wizard that forces password change on first login
  3. Never commit credentials to version control
  4. Validate that the admin password has been changed from default on every startup

Fixed: Default admin credentials removed

Changes:

  1. settings.py — Removed hardcoded admin@example.local / adminadmin defaults. Made admin_email and admin_password Optional[str] with default None.
  2. init_db.py — Only auto-creates admin if credentials are explicitly configured via env vars. Added setup instructions in log.
  3. User model — Added must_change_password boolean field (default False). Initial admin created via env vars gets must_change_password=True.
  4. POST /api/auth/setup — New endpoint to create the first admin user (only works if no admin exists yet). Sets password directly, no defaults.
  5. POST /api/auth/change-password — New endpoint to change password and clear must_change_password flag.
  6. Token response — Now includes must_change_password flag so frontend can redirect to password change.
  7. docker-compose.yml — Removed :-adminadmin and :-admin@example.local fallbacks (now use :?error to fail if not set).
  8. .env.example — Removed hardcoded defaults, added setup instructions.

Verification

  • All 36 relevant tests pass
  • Settings load correctly with and without env vars
  • Auth routes registered: /auth/setup, /auth/token, /auth/change-password, /auth/refresh, /auth/me
  • Commit: 398920f on issue-80-evidence-phase2

Migration note

Existing databases with the user table will not have the must_change_password column. A manual migration may be needed:

ALTER TABLE "user" ADD COLUMN must_change_password BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE;
