Editor has no 'insert stop' or 'remove stop' affordance in the Bottom Thread Bar — user wanting to add a thread that the auto-digitize didn't include has to switch to the workspace, no editor-level control #296

Finding

The Bottom Thread Bar (per EditorThreadBar.tsx) shows the existing thread stops. There's no "+" button to add a stop, no "X" button to remove a stop.

grep -rn 'addStop\|removeStop\|insertStop' src/components/editor/ returns 0.

A user designing a design wants to add a 6th thread stop (e.g., a brand-new color not in the auto-digitize output):

  • Has to switch to the workspace
  • The workspace's stitch object list has a per-object color picker
  • Adds the new color there
  • Switches back to the editor
  • The new color appears as a thread stop

The editor's thread bar is a read-only display. The workspace's stitch objects are the underlying data.

Where

  • EditorThreadBar: src/components/editor/EditorThreadBar.tsx (read-only)
  • No add/remove: grep -rn 'addStop' src/components/editor/ returns 0
  • The workspace's stitch object color picker: the place where the user can change colors

Suggested fix shape

  1. Hover buttons: when hovering a stop, show a small "X" button to remove it (or convert the path's color to a different existing stop).

  2. Add stop: a "+" button at the end of the thread bar opens a color picker (the same picker as the right panel). The user picks a color, and any path with that color is added to the thread stop list (if not already present).

  3. State: thread stops are derived from paths; the editor's add/remove is the explicit override.

  4. Implementation: keep the underlying stops in sync. Adding a stop is "make a new path with this color"; removing a stop is "change the color of all paths with this color to a different color."

Severity

Low. The user can change colors in the right panel. Power users iterating in the editor notice.

Discovered by

Gap analysis (2026-10-02) of editor thread bar affordances.

  • The right panel's color picker (per #185) is where colors are typically set.
  • #295 (open) — Reorder thread stops in editor. Same surface; the reorder is the polish.
  • The thread bar is the visual display; the per-path color picker is the data entry.
